The metal plate on which the brake shoes and cylinders are mounted is called the brake backing plate.
Replacement is only necessary if rust has taken over. As the backing plates are always exposed to the elements, there will not be a single Volkswagen where they are still new.
If only the springs that lock the brake shoe adjustment device are broken, you do not need to buy new brake backing plates. They are available separately for most years of construction (see Replacement parts tab).
Comes with a solid black paint, i.e. ready for use.
