The ring or thrust washer between the outer front wheel bearing and the lock nut(s) must be flat and undamaged, as this ring is crucial for the adjustment of the wheel bearings. If the surface is not correct or if the ring is worn, the play in the wheel bearings cannot be adjusted correctly, which can lead to premature wear of the bearings.
Proceed as follows:
1. Tighten the nut against the bushing a little more than hand-tight and at the same time turn the brake drum or the brake disc to centre the bearings in the bearing bracket
2. Loosen the nut and retighten it until you can still move the thrust ring with a screwdriver.
3. Fasten the nut or nuts.
When replacing the wheel bearings, it is therefore important to check the thrust rings as well and, in case of doubt, replace them.
