These nuts have been used for several functions in different Volkswagen models. They are used as a bearing nut for the front wheel on the right-hand side, for mounting the ball joint on the spindle, for mounting the steering wheel on the tie rod and as a locknut for the ball joint on the tie rod.
For the steering wheel nut function, some models mention complete years of manufacture, so the chassis number is then important:

Bus 1974 chassis number 214 2164 059
For the ball joint fixing nut function, which is only used on the VW type 3, they are used up to chassis number 167 880. .
