In the air-cooled engines of the third generation VW Bus, the hot air for heating is conducted through the heat exchangers by means of a fan located on the alternator.
This fans rotates in the fan housing and forces the hot air through the heating pots via various connecting parts. The rubber mentioned here provides the connection between the fan housing and the connectors.
However, it is essential that this rubber does not have any cracks and that it fits properly. If it is not, hot air will be blown into the engine compartment, which can lead to an increase in engine temperature, which can be very harmful to an air-cooled engine.
Check the condition of the rubber at each service and replace it if cracks appear, but do not wait until it is torn.
